In conjunction with the 10th anniversary of ILHAM Gallery, we are embarking on an ambitious and unique outreach project — a mobile gallery housed in a 40-foot climate-controlled shipping container which will travel throughout Malaysia by truck to reach a wide variety of audiences.
The project entitled SKOLA GAMBAR ILHAM is an extension of ILHAM Gallery’s commitment to make Malaysian art accessible to everyone, particularly to those who would not normally enjoy access. ILHAM Gallery will kick off Phase 1 of SKOLA GAMBAR ILHAM in July and August 2025 when the mobile gallery truck will travel to communities at low cost flats around the Klang Valley.
The specially curated exhibition onboard the mobile gallery truck is entitled Ceritalah and features artworks by 12 contemporary Malaysian artists — Anisa Abdullah, Ho Mei Kei, Ismail Hashim, Joshua Kane Gomes, Kide Baharudin, Nadirah Zakariya, Padil Osman, Pangrok Sulap, Rafiee Ghani, Sharon Chin, Vincent Leong, and Yau Bee Ling. The exhibition offers an accessible selection of contemporary art with a wide range of techniques from painting, printmaking, collage and batik, to photography, sculpture, and video. The exhibition explores the way artists create narratives about contemporary life in Malaysia, whether documenting our daily life in the city or kampung, or reflecting on our relationships with our environment, our families, and each other.
The exhibition will be accompanied by educational material and texts which will give viewers, particularly students, some background into the artworks as well as help to stimulate discussion and learning through reflective experience. There will also be workshops and other programmes organised at each site visit.
“Over the years, we have seen a huge increase in the number of visitors to ILHAM which has been wonderful. Now, we want to bring ILHAM out to the community, where we hope it can impact a wider audience. This mobile gallery truck project continues our mission to make Malaysian art more accessible to all Malaysians as we believe that arts education is a valuable resource to inculcate creative and critical thinking in our young people. We know that museums and galleries are usually visited by those living in Kuala Lumpur with easy access. We want to bridge that inequality by bringing the gallery experience to communities who would not normally have the opportunity to visit”, said Rahel Joseph, Gallery Director of ILHAM.
Phase 2 and Phase 3 of SKOLA GAMBAR ILHAM will see the mobile gallery truck travel to other parts of Malaysia including Sabah and Sarawak over the next two years.
SKOLA GAMBAR ILHAM Mobile Gallery Truck will be parked outside the ILHAM building on 28–29 June, 8–10 July, 15–17 July, 22–24 July, 29–31 July, 5–7 August, 12–14 August 2025.
