Robert Rauschenberg and Asia

Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008, U.S.A) is widely acknowledged as one of the most innovative and influential artists of the twentieth century. His work foreshadowed many major developments in post-war art such as Pop Art, Conceptual Art, and installation art. His experimental practice redefined what an art object could be, incorporating everday items and mass media images into his works, and blurring the line between painting and sculpture. This exhibition, organised by M+ in collaboration with ILHAM Gallery, marks the first comprehensive exploration of the artist's many projects in Asia, and forms a key part of the worldwide celebration of his centennial in 2025.

Hsu Chia-Wei: Always Ambiguous With the Passage of Time

This exhibition presents an array of works from the Taiwanese artist Hsu Chia-Wei on Southeast Asia and Taiwan. Informed by a range of historical sources and technologies, these works keenly probe traces of the archives, archaeological sites, scientific studies, and commonplace narratives and activate them through video, Virtual Reality, 3-D printing, and interactive AI. They are also staged in relation to soundscapes, interviews, drone footage, folklore, installations, and instruments of recordation such as drawing and the encyclopedia—all to further deepen, widen, and texture the already dense details of both history and everyday life. Scenes from Northern Thailand, colonial-period Indonesia, Malaya (now Malaysia and Singapore), and Taiwan are rendered vivid and mesmerising as references to both the past and the future.
