Tips for parents & teachers visiting the gallery with young visitors

Let the children take the time to really examine the artworks in the gallery.

Ask them open-ended questions ie. questions that there are no yes or no answers to. For example: “What do you think the people in this painting are doing?” “How many objects can you count in this painting?”

The great thing about art appreciation is that there are no right and wrong answers. There are many different interpretations to an artwork and it is up to the viewer to work out what the artist is trying to tell us. Art is a wonderful way to encourage children to really explore their imagination and creativity!

Don’t give them too much information about the artworks to start with. Let them tell you what they notice in the artworks themselves.
