ILHAM Conversations: Eddin Khoo

20 April 2024, 4:00pm – 5:30pm

Ritual, as viewed by PUSAKA Founder, Eddin Khoo, is a deeply personal practice aimed at disciplining the soul, residing in the realm of wonder, poetry and speculation. In Southeast Asian cultures, particularly of the Malay Archipelago, belief systems often revolve around concepts such as 'angin' and 'semangat', which are rooted in an understanding of human temperament and desire as fundamental to shaping an individual’s character and creative spirit. The transition from individual to social being can lead to tensions between personal desires and communal obligations, often alleviated through rituals that provide emotional release and reinforce familial and social ties. In this context, ritual ceremonies aim to achieve equilibrium between the individual and the community while acknowledging the innate powers of the parable, of the allusive imagination, and myth as a world view embracing community, memory and lineage. The cyclical enactment of stories, such as in the Wayang Kulit (shadow play), reflects the epic imagination and metaphorical mindset of traditional societies, challenging modern perceptions that emphasize empirical ‘reason’ over mythological understanding.
In this lecture, Eddin Khoo also explores how contemporary artists in Malaysia and the region grapple with the ritual impulse, touching on several artworks featured in ILHAM Gallery’s current exhibition, Titik Garis Bentuk: Drawing as Practice.
This talk is organised by PUSAKA in collaboration with ILHAM Gallery.
